4 Yard Skein-winder™ (4YO) based on the HDSS product line
Commercial grade skein-winder that can make skeins from 30" to 144" in circumference (4 yards)

New Video of 4 Yard Skein-winder

NKK has developed a special version of our skein-winder/swift product based on its existing product line of swifts and skein-winders. This unit has new aluminum arms that measure 54" in diameter. This will enable the unit to wind 4 yard skeins.

The system employs the use of the same components used on our existing skein-winder with the exception of the aluminum extrusion arms. These will measure 54" versus 31". So, the unit will look just like our existing unit except it will have much larger arms.

As a result of the increase in diameter, this unit has to be floor mounted. So when you purchase a 4YO Swift or Skein-winder, it comes mounted on a special floor stand.

Our Triple Yarn Guide System, which allows the user to wind 3 skeins simultaneously, also works with the 4YO. So now you can wind 12 yards of yarn per rotation. Assuming that you can wind yarn at the rate of 1.5 rotations per second, this means you can wind 18 yards per second in manual mode (or 26 yards per second in motorized mode).

This unit an be purchased as either a Swift or a Skein-winder (the primary difference is that the skein-winder includes our high tech Electronic Rotation Counter (ERC) and the Swift does not).

Either unit can be motorized with our new Motor option. The motor can be connected to the ERC and the ERC will shut down the motor drive when specific qty's of yarn have been wound.

The combination of a 4 yard winder, with our electronic metering system and our motor drive and our Triple skein yarn guide results in the most advanced high capacity winder on the market. The only other systems that come close measure just 3 yard skeins and do not have a sophisticated counter system.

When used with our new motor drive system for skein-winders, we use a slightly slower speed and higher torque pulley combination (130 RPM) so that the additional drag on the motor due to the added weight of the system and yarn, has no impact on overall performance.

Commentary:

Our HDSS is so sturdy and well built it can easily be adapted to the heavier loads that a 4 yard skein-winder introduces. Even our motor drive system can easily handle the additional loads.

Our 4YO unit is the first available 4 yard skein-winder that is both motor and meter controlled. To the best of our knowledge, it is the only commercially available 4 yard skein-winder available. If you need to make 4 yards skeins for dyeing operations because you want to limit the frequency of dye repeats, then you should consider our 4 yarder. We also have a 4 yard Niddy Noddy but this is no match for the 4 yard skein-winder. With this new product entry combined with our experience in the Niddy Noddy world, we are (by default) the leaders in making 4 yard skeins.

Pricing for the 4 yard Swift and Skein-winder range between $450 - $1030 (varies depending on whether the ERC and motor are included).

Construction Details

Two Mounting methods for a single Swift design.

Super strong I-Beam construction of the center column of the swift.

Table top and floor stand units share the same style "socket" for mounting the I-Beam. User simply loosens the knob that holds the I-Beam in the table socket and lifts the I-Beam out and then inserts it into the floor stand.

The floor stand takes the term "solidity" to a whole new level. The H pattern leg set forms a 26" x 26" pattern.

The two high tech German bearing units are attached to a solid 2-1/4" thick block of hardwood at the top of the I-Beam. A 5/8" diameter steel shaft then supports the swift arms.

Interlocking aluminum extrusion arms reinforced with a steel 4 lobe custom washer for the main swift unit and custom designed aluminum sleds with integrated braking systems and yarn guides complete the mechanical system.

Our electronics include a non-contact counter system based on magnetic switch technology. Our optional advanced Electronic Rotation Counter (ERC) Is the only high technology counting system for skein-winders in existence.

Our motor drive system can be controlled by the ERC. Motor is mounted to the rear of the I-Beam and can be used on both the Table and Floor mounts.

No other manufacturer in the industry uses anything like this combination of materials or features in their swift or skein-winder design - nobody.
