Suggested Class Name: Traditional Fair Isle
Knitting From Color Selection to Blocking
Brief Description: Learn all about Fair Isle
knitting from choosing a color palette to cutting steeks and finishing. Knit a
sampler with 9 colors of your choosing.
Extended description Students will learn everything
they need to know to complete any 2 color stranded knitted project in the
future. The class will consist of choosing a 9 color palette from the 70 colors
available, then knitting a sampler that will include the following: 2 color
knitting techniques using both in right hand, both in left hand, one in each
hand; changing an unwanted color; 3 kinds of borders; seamless facings; 3 colors
per row; 3 kinds of steek sewing with and without a sewing machine; cutting
steeks; fixing mistakes without ripping; buttonholes in corrugated ribbing;
finishing and blocking. History of FI knitting and other 2 color stranded
knitting and designing for Fair Isle knitting will also be discussed. At least
2 of the techniques are original and were developed by the instructor.
Suggested length: 18 hours 3 days at least, more
would be great.
What skills or knowledge do students need to take this
class? Students need to know how to knit and purl and have a good
understanding of general knitting techniques.
What will you talk about and/or demonstrate & what will
students do? Students will choose 9 colors and knit a sampler incorporating
all traditional Fair techniques.
How many students can you handle effectively in the
class? 10 is ideal, 12 OK, will discuss more.
Will they need to do homework? NO
Will they need to bring supplies? #1 (2.5mm) 16
circular needle, #3 (3.25mm) 16 circular needle, #3 (3.25) 40 circular
needle , small crochet hook B
Is there a materials fee: $14.00 for : 10 - ½ ounce
skeins of fingering weight yarn in students chosen colors (70 colors will be
made available), ring markers particular to these techniques and a workbook. I
also provide, but do not charge for, chocolates to reduce the stress of cutting
steeks.
Skill level: Intermediate to advanced
Set up for Instructor: 4 large tables, chairs for
all, good lighting
