Wonky Balls!!

Those dreaded wonky balls, yarn balls that look like space ships or worse. Why are they occurring?

Don't worry, they are easily corrected if you understand why they occur.

Although wonky balls occur for a number of reasons, they usually result for just one - O-Ring tension against the conical shaped shaft.

Many people do not know how to adjust the tension of the O-Ring so when they experience wonky balls, they adjust the O-Ring tension the wrong way and it re-occurs. We will tell you how to adjust it correctly but first it is important to understand how the system should work.

The O-ring is the black rubber ring that is wrapped around the spindle flange(the circular disk-like gray plastic material at the base of the spindle).

O-ring

It acts like a TIRE and causes the flange and spindle to turn on their axis as the wooden arm and spindle turn in a large arc as the user turns the handle.

If the O-Ring (tire) presses too tightly against the shaft, then it cannot rotate. If it cannot rotate, then the alternating wrapping action that forms the yarn balls that we all want, cannot occur.

In addition to the  spindle arm moving in large arcs in response to the handle being turned, the spindle itself spins on its "axis" (like a child's top) and is driven by the O-Ring that presses against the shaft.

However, if the O-Ring is pressed too tightly against the shaft, it will either not allow the spindle to turn at all or will be be delayed. At normal winding speeds, any delay in the turning action of the spindle will cause a problem and result in a wonky ball.

As soon as you see a wonky ball, you should suspect the O-Ring tension and adjust it accordingly.

How should you adjust it?  Watch this video and also pull down this pdf which will show you how to adjust it and test it. If you watch this video and review the pdf document, and then do the 3 tests, you will be able to adjust your unit very easily.

If properly set it up, you will not need to adjust the unit more than once every 6 months.
